The main idea of section 13 is to highlight how due to China’s isolation for many years, Chinese people have missed out or have a frail understanding of the struggles black people have endured in the United States. We see how important figures like Martin Luther King Jr, Malcolm X, and Fannie Lou Are not really known to the Chinese. The special thing about this writing is, Alicia Walker mentions various songs that are important in understanding the long history of black peoples struggles, songs that consist of “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing”,”Hold On”, “We Shall Overcome”, and “Old Black Joe”. Walker said she was embarrassed that she did not remember all of the words to James Weldon Johnson’s Negro National Anthem “Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing” and it really got me thinking about how important it might be to her to fully know and sing the lyrics to this song, because it wouldn’t just be passing along a song to the people in the trip, but the nature of the song and what it represents to her and other African Americans in the United States.I have learned that communicating to an audience is like a passing of information amongst each other and how important it is to fully acknowledge what that information is, as we see Walker explain the nature of these songs to the host who wants to prove their understanding of black Americans.
